Discussion & Documentation

Two Stölz families arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 9 June 1766 aboard an English barque named George under the command of Skipper Adam Bairnsfair. They both settled in the Volga German colony of Paulskaya. Their relationship is not recorded, but they are presumed to be uncle and niece. Further research is needed to confirm this relationship.

(1) Orphan Margaretha [Stölz] arrived in Oranienbaum along with Christian Lempe and his family.

Margareta [Stölz] is recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with the Christian Lempe family.

Margaretha Stölz (age not recorded) is recorded on the 1767 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 21 along with the Christian Lempe family. They had arrived in Paulskaya on 7 June 1767. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Stölz and Lempe families, but based upon the entry from the Oranienbaum passenger list, she is probably the step-daughter of Christian Lempe.

(2) Wilhelm Stölz, a weaver, and his wife [sic] Margaretha arrived in Oranienbaum. They are recorded on the Oranienbaum passenger list immediately following the Christian Lempe family.

Willhelm Steltz and his aunt [sic] Margar. [Baaß] are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Widow Anna Margaretha Stölz and her son Wilhelm (age 22) are recorded on the 1767 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 42. They had arrived in Paulskaya on 7 June 1767.

Wilhelm's son is recorded on the 1798 census of Paulskaya in Household No. Pl52.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Wilhelm Stölz came from the German region of Friedberg. The 1767 census records that Anna Margaretha Stölz came from the German region of Frei[d]berg.
