Discussion & Documentation

Two Weiss families arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard a ship named Die Zwei Gebrüder (The Two Brothers) under the command of Skipper Nicolaus Peter Pinck. Their relationship to each other, if any, needs further research.

(1) Kaspar Weiss, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Katharina, age 13; Andreas, age 3) arrived in Oranienbaum.

Caspar Weiss, his wife Anna Elisabeth, and children (Catharina, age 13½; August, born en route) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that newborn August died en route.

They are recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Nieder-Monjou in Household No. 99 along with a note that they relocated to the Volga German colony of Bettinger in 1768.

(2) Johann Weiss, a single farmer, arrived in Oranienbaum.

Joh. Caspar Weiss is recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

It is not known in which colony he settled.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that these Weiss families came from the German region of Darmstadt.
