Discussion & Documentation

Johann[es] Haas, a farmer, and his wife Katharina arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the ship Die Neue Freiheit von Bremen under the command of Skipper Steingrawer.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Brabander on 13 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 24 along with orphan Johannes Kaster (age 3) whose parents died on the trip between Oranienbaum and Saratov. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Haas and Kaster families.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Haas came from the German region of Breslau. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Windorf in Bayern (Bavaria).
