Discussion & Documentation

Johann Martin Sternagel, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and daughters (Katharina, age 18; Elisabeth, age 16) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 29 July 1766 aboard a ship named Apollo under the command of Skipper Friedrich Detloff Mörenberg.

He settled in the Volga German colony of Kraft on 18 August 1767 and is recorded there as a widower on the 1767 census in Household No. 46 along with the family of his son-in-law Johann Schmidt. [See Schmidt Family.]

Martin Sternagel (age 82) and his wife Katharina Elisabeth [surname not recorded] (age 65) are recorded on the 1798 census of Kraft in Household No. Kf24.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Martin Sternagel came from the German region of Hannover.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Sternagel family among the Volga German colonies.
