Johann Dawu was born in approximately 1788 in the Netherlands. He served in Napoleon's army and fought against the Russians. He was captured by the Russians, and in 1812, was settled in the Volga German colony of Ober-Monjou.

He appears on the 1834 Ober-Monjou Census in Household No. 26 where his death is recorded in 1818.

There are no known surviving male descendants of this family among the Volga German colonies.
