Johann [Herrman] Hohnstein, a farmer, and his wife Anna arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 May 1766 aboard the galliot Anna Katharina under the command of Skipper Daniel Geier.
Herrman and his new wife Christina settled in the Volga German colony of Kaneau on 10 May 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 52. [One translation of this census records this surname as Holstein, but subsequent documents record this surname as Hohnstein.]
Daniel Hohnstein from Kaneau, believed to be the son of Herrman & Christina, is recorded on the 1798 census of Schaffhausen in Household No. Sh24.
The 1767 census records that Herrman Hohnstein came from the German village of Mühlhausen.
