Johannes Hege was born in approximately 1787 in Mülhausen.
He served as a soldier in the 8th French Hussar Regiment of Napoleon's Army. He fought against and was captured by the Russians.
In 1814, he was settled in the Volga German colony of Bettinger.
Milovidov records that as of 1814 he still had two brothers living in Mülhausen.
He is recorded on the 1834 Bettinger census in Household No. 130 along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Susannental. He is recorded on the 1834 Susannental census in Household No. 27.
Milovidov records that Johannes Hege came from the German village of Mülhausen in the Alsace region where he had been a peasant farmer.
