Johann Hessel, a single man, arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard an English frigate under the command of Skipper Adam Beerfeier.
Johann Kaspar Hessel, his new wife Anna Maria, and her children (Kaspar Bastian, age 14; Elisabeth, age 9 [surname Bengel]) are recorded on the 1767 census of Dreispitz in Household No 28. They settled in the Volga German colony of Dreispitz on 20 July 1767.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Hessel was a weaver from the German region of Darmstadt. The 1767 census records that Johann Kaspar Hessel was a craftsman (Handwerker) from the German village of Gelnhausen in the Isenburg region.
The Hessel surname does not continue among the Volga German colonies.
