Gottlieb Ehrlich [other documents identify him as Gottfried Ehrlich], a farmer, his wife Maria Elisabeth, and sons (Johann Gottfried, age 13; Gottlieb, age 1) are recorded on the 1767 census of Kaneau in Household No. 27. They had settled there on 7 June 1767.

In 1786, Gottfried Ehrlich and his family moved from Kaneau to Schaffhausen.

The 1767 census records that Gottlieb [sic] Ehrlich came from the German region of Dessau.
