Discussion & Documentation

Christian Hermann, a farmer, and his wife Maria arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 20 May 1766 aboard the Russian galliot Katharina Eleonora under the command of Skipper Peter Röder.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Dehler on 26 June 1767. Christian Hermann is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 34 along with his wife Elisabeth and her son Nikolaus Schäfer (age 7). Her husband had died in route to Saratov in the group led by Obrleutenant Oldenburg.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Christian Hermann came from the German region of Baden. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Weitersburg in the Kurpfalz.
