Discussion & Documentation

There are two Ludwig families from Gera that settled in the Volga German colonies. Their relationship to each other, if any, needs further research.

(1) Georg [sic] Christian Ludowig [sic] & Anna Eleonora Dietrich were married on 9 June 1766 in the cobbler's house in Lübeck.

Georg Ludwig, a baker, and his wife Anna arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard an English frigate under the command of Skipper Adam Beerfeier.

Georg Christophor [sic] Ludwig and his wife Anna are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Johann [sic] Christian Ludwig, a baker (Bäcker), and his wife Anna Eleonora settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 23 July 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 17.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Georg Ludwig came from the German region of Saxony. The 1767 census records that Johann Christian Ludwig came from the German village of Gera in the Thüringen region.

(2) Johann Ludwig, a single miller, arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 10 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Nikolaus Peter Pink.

Johann Michael Ludewig [sic] is recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Johann Michael Ludwig, a single miller (Müller), is recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Boisroux in Household No. 69.

It is not known in which colony he settled.

The 1767 census records that Johann Michael Ludwig came from the German village of Gera in Saxony.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Ludwig branch among the Volga German colonies.
