Herrmann Esslau, a polisher (Polierer), his wife Elisabeth, and daughter Adelheit (age 4-months) are recorded on the 1767 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 69. They had settled there on 27 August 1766.

The 1767 census records that Herrmann Esslau came from the German village of Vechta.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
