Discussion & Documentation

Gotthelf Hohmann [transcribed as Gottlieb Hoffmann by Plehve] (age 16) arrived in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 27 August 1766. He is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 232 along with his stepfather Paul Schnautz. [See Schnautz Family.]

Gotthelf Hohmann (age 22), a single Prussian Lieutenant (Preussischer Leutenant), is recorded on the 1776 Katharinenstadt Grundbuch [Land Register] in Household No. 189 along with a note that he is in Simbirsk.

Gotthilf [sic] Hohmann married in 1776 in Katharinenstadt to Barbara Spister, daughter of Joseph Spister of Ober-Monjou.

Gotthilf [sic] Hohmann and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. Ka091.

Gotthelf Ho(h)mann and his sons are recorded on the 1811 census of Beauregard in Household No. 49 along with a note that they had arrived in Beauregard from Katharinenstadt in 1799.

Margaretha Hohmann, widow of Gotthelf Hohmann, and her sons ([a] Ulrich; [b] Georg Anton; [c] Johann Gottlieb) are recorded on the 1834 census of Beauregard in Households No. 6 & 17.

[a] The death of Ulrich Hohmann in 1856 is recorded on the 1857 census of Beauregard in Household No. 6.

[b] Georg Anton Hohmann and his family are recorded on the 1857 census of Beauregard in Household No. 29.

[c] Johann Gottlieb Hohmann and his family are recorded on the 1857 census of Beauregard in Household No. 30.

The 1767 census translation by Igor Plehve records that Gotthilf [sic] Hohmann came from Mähren/Mehren/Meren, but that could be because this is from where his stepfather Paul Schnautz came. [There are a number of villages named Mähren/Mehren/Meren in Rheinland-Pfalz, Hessen, or Saxony.] The 1776 Katharinenstadt Land Register records that he came from the city of Dresden in the German region of Sachsen (Saxony).
