Discussion & Documentation

Johann Henrich Schneider and his wife Maria Magdalena née Jung arrived from Lübeck at the port in Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the galliott Anna Catharina with Johann Joachim Janson as skipper.

They were travelling with their nieces Anna Elisabetha Haas and her sister Anna Maria, daughters of Johann Peter Haas & Anna Margaretha Schneider (both of whom had died in 1760). Anna Margaretha Schneider is the sister of Johann Heinrich Schneider.

J. Heinr. Schneider, his wife Anna Maria, and daughters (Anna Elisabeth, age 15; Anna Maria, age 10½) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They are recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 47. They settled in Hockerberg.

In 1770, Johann Heinrich Schneider and his family moved from Hockerberg to Basel.

On the 1798 census of Basel, widow Magdalena Schneider née Jung is recorded in Household No. Bs35 along with Anna Maria Haas and her family.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Heinrich Schneider came from the German region of Darmstadt. The 1767 census record that came from the German village of Steinbach in the region of Darmstadt.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Schneider family among the Volga German colonies.
