Discussion & Documentation

Magdalena Maria Grabe, daughter of blacksmith Johann Georg Grabe, was born in Veldenz on 20 April 1736.

Johann Georg Grabe and his family immigrated to Fahlenwerder in Brandenburg in 1747.

Magdalena Maria Grabe married Philipp Manweiler, son of Johann Adolph Manweiler & Maria Elisabeth Schleichel. [See Manweiler Family.]

Philipp Manweiler and his family immigrated to Schleswig-Holstein (Denmark) along with his father and family where they settled in Flensburg on 17 May 1762. They left Flensburg on 10 June 1763 and joined those moving to Russia.

[There is a marriage of Johann George Kraeup from the Pfalz to Sibilla Spett (also from the Pfalz), widow of an unnamed Spett, recorded on 23 May 1765 in the parish register of the Reformed Church of Saints Peter & Paul in Danzig. This marriage is recorded among other families that settled in the Volga German colony of Messer, so this Johann George Kraeup may be related to the above mentioned Magdalena Maria Grabe. This Johann George Kraeup/Grabe has not been located among the Volga German colonies.]

The Manweiler family arrived in the colony of Messer on 7 July 1766. Philipp, his wife Magdalena Maria [Grabe], and children (Maria Elisabeth, age 14; Johann Philipp, age 8; Johann Christoph, age 4; Johann Adam, age ½) are recorded on the 1767 census of Messer in Household No. 5.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Grabe family among the Volga German colonies.
