Biography

Nikodemus Ihly, son of Philipp Ihly, was born 8 February 1882 in Karlsruhe (Odessa District).

He studied theology at the Roman Catholic Seminary in Saratov. He was ordained 8 September 1910.

Father Ihly served the following Volga German parishes: Mariental (1910) and Hölzel (1911-1914).

From 1914-1921, he served St. Joseph the Bethrothed Catholic parish in Nikolaev (Kherson District). From 1921-1927, he served St. Augustine Catholic parish in Eremeevka near Odessa (a branch of the parish of St. Gabriel Archangel in Alsace (Kherson District). In 1927, he was appointed rector of the church in Dnepropetrovsk.

On 16 December 1933, he was arrested on charges of "counter-revolutionary agitation and propaganda," the same charges made against numerous priests at that time. On 26 February 1934, he was sentenced to three years of exile. His fate is unknown, but he is presumed to have died at the hands of government operatives.
