Discussion & Documentation

Johann Beuss, a gardener (Gärtner), his wife Anna [widow] Hell, children (Antonia, age 14; Johanna, age 3), and step-daughter Maria [Hell] (age 2) are recorded on the 1767 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 43. They had settled there on 27 August 1766.

Johann Beuss, his wife Anna née Kramm (widow Hell), and children (Elisabeth, age 7; Franciskus, age 3) are recorded on the 1776 Katharinenstadt Grundbuch [Land Register] in Household No. 46 along with step-daughter Maria née Hell. The Land Register also records that Maria née Hell married Heinrich Hertling in Orlovskaya.

He evidently died. Widow Anna Maria Hertling is recorded on the Movement Tables accompanying the 1798 census of Ober-Monjou recording that in 1778 she married Johann Heine [sic] in Orlovskaya. The 1778 Katharinenstadt Land Register records that she married on 4 February [1778?] to Herbert Kohl.

The 1767 census records that Johann Beuss came from the Dutch town of Amsterdam in Holland and that Anna Hell came from the German region of Köln. The 1776 Katharinenstadt Land Register records that Johann Beuss came from Amsterdam and that Anna Kramm came from the German town of Köln am Main.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
