Beginning in 1732, Altenburg was located in the duchy of Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg. Following the extinction of the Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg line in 1825, a rearrangement of the territory resulted in Albenburg becoming part of the duchy of Saxe-Hildburghausen and a succession of subsequent realignments leading up to the abolition of the German monarchies and the creation of the free state of Thüringen in 1920. Today, Altenburg is in Thüringen.
