Historically, Ober-Klingen (and its neighboring Nieder-Klingen) were located in the Kurpfalz (Electorate of the Pfalz) until 1803. For a brief time, they belonged to the Landgrafschaft of Hessen-Darmstadt, but were split in 1806 with Ober-Klingen staying with Hessen-Darmstadt and Nieder-Klingen coming under territories controlled by the Lords of Löwenstein-Wertheim.
Today, Ober-Klingen is administratively part of the municipality of Otzberg.

The church building in Ober-Klingen serves the entire parish of Klingen (Ober- and Nieder-).
As early as 1303 there was a chapel on the site of the current church building in Ober-Klingen. In 1606 it was expanded into a Gothic hall church. The hood and lantern that today sit atop the church tower were added in 1756. There are three bells in the belfry that survived both the First and Second World Wars without being melted down.
There are faded remains of wall paintings from the 14th century in the choir.
The current organ in the Ober-Klingen church was built by Heinrich Bechstein and installed in 1895.
