Steinheim (Hungen), Kr. Gießen, Hessen

The first written mention of Steinheim is between 1118 and 1137 under the name of Stenhem. It is mentioned again as Steynheim in 1264.

At the end of the Thirty Years' War, the village burned down completely in 1646.

From 1604 to 1806, Steinheim was located in the Landgrafschaft Hessen-Darmstadt.

Since 31 December 1970, Steinheim has been administratively part of the municipality of Hungen.

St. Catherine's Chapel dates back to the second half of the 13th century. The village fire in 1646 left only the church tower. By 1696, a new half-timbered church building had been constructed.

The building fell into disrepair, and in 1847 the community began holding worship services in the Steinheimer School.

The old church building was used as a warehouse for a number of years. In 1962, a new stone nave replaced the dilapidated half-timbered structure and the tower was refurbished so that worship services could once again be held there. The remains of late medieval painting has been preserved on the walls of the choir.

The tower houses a bronze bell cast by Wipert Becker which dates from 1492. It had been dedicated to St. Cyriacus.

In 1966, Förster & Nicolaus installed an organ with four registers.
