Johann Friedrich Altag was born in approximately 1792, probably in France.  He served in Napoleon's army and fought against the Russians.

He was captured by the Russians, and in 1812, was originally settled in the Volga German colony of Krasnoyar.

He is recorded on the 1834 census of Messer in Household No. 187 along with a note that he moved to the colony of Franzosen in 1825.

Friedrich Altag from Messer and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Franzosen in Household No. 109 along with a note that he died there in 1830.

Friedrich (junior) Altag, son of Friedrich Altag, is recorded on the 1850 census of Franzosen in Household No. 131 along with a note that he moved back to Messer.

Johann Friedrich Altach from Franzosen and his family are recorded on the 1834-1850 Messer Family List in Household No. 239.

Friedrich (junior) Altag and his family are recorded on the 1857 census of Messer in Household No. 188.
