Discussion & Documentation:

Joh. Henrich Arnold was baptized in Steinbach on 28 October 1711. He married there on 9 February 1741 to A. Elisabeth Keßler. She had been baptized in Steinbach on 11 June 1721.

The births of 8 children born to Joh. Henrich Arnold & A. Elisabeth Keßler are recorded in the parish register of Steinbach: (1) Joh. Peter, born 26 January 1742; (2) Conrad, born 3 October 1743; (3) Anna Margaretha, born 7 October 1745; (4) Anna Maria, born 5 November 1747, buried 16 June 1750; (5) Joh. Ludwig, born 30 January 1749 ["1760 fortgangen" - "gone in 1760"]; (6) Johannes, born 8 December 1751, died 18 September 1765; (7) Joh. Philipp, born 30 March 1753, died 10 January 1763; and (8) Anna Elisabeth, born 14 September 1755.

A note in the Steinbach parish register in 1763 records that Joh. Henrich Arnold "der seine Frau u. Kinder vor etlichen Jahren verlassen" [translation: "left his wife and children several years ago"].

The parish register of Steinbach records "Maria Elisabeth, Johann Henrich Arnolds rel. Frau, ist ao. 1766 nach Rußland (Astrachan) gezogen" [translation: "Maria Elisabeth, Johann Henrich Arnold's wife, moved to Russia (Astrachan) in 1766"].

Maria Elisabeth and her daughter (Anna Elissabeth) arrived from Lübeck at the port in Oraninebaum on 8 August 1766 on the Anna Catharina, along with many other emigrants from Oberhessen. Neither one of them show up in the Volga German colonies on the 1767 Census, probably indicating that Maria Elisabeth had remarried and they are recorded under that surname. There is an Anna Margaretha Arnold who appears on the 1798 census of Hockerberg in Household No. Hb04 where there are other families from Steinbach living.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Arnold family among the Volga German colonies.
