Johann Nikolaus Bähr (also spelled Bär) was born in 1714 in Ober Schwarzbach (near Heidelberg). He married in Schönbrunn on 23 April 1743 to Anna Margaretha Weber. She was born 13 September 1711 in Unter Schönbrunn. Their son Johann Philipp was born in Ober Schwarzbach on 17 July 1745.

The family immigrated in Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein) arriving in Fridericia on 1 May 1760. Anna Margaretha died there. They are last recorded among the Danish colonies on 26 April 1763.

The family joined the migration to Russia.

The parish register of the Reformed Church of Saints Peter & Paul in Danzig records that Nicolaus Baehr from the Pfalz & Anna Sophia Scheibe from the Pfalz, widow of a Mr. Scheibe, were married on 23 May 1765 in Danzig.

The Bähr family settled in the Volga German colony of Anton on 28 September 1766. Nikolaus, a farmer, his wife Sophia, and children (Johann Georg Adam, age 18; Johann Philipp Georg, age 15; Susanna Margaretha, age 7) are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 3. Son Philipp, also a farmer, is recorded on the 1767 census in Household No. 39 along with a note that he is living in the household of his father. Philipp's divorced wife Maria Elisabeth Ganshorn is recorded on the 1767 census of Anton in Household No. 23.

Philipp Bähr and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Anton in Household No. An07 along with a note that he is serving as the schoolmaster in the colony of Kukkus.

Descendants of this Bähr family are recorded on the 1834 census of Anton in Households No. 10, 26, & 43.

The Eichhorns record that the Bähr family came from the German village of Dilsberg in the Heidelberg district of the Kurpfalz region. The 1767 census records that they came from the district of Heidelberg in the Kurpfalz region.
