Discussion & Documentation

Mattias Bender, a farmer, and his wife Barbara arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum 8 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Heidemann.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Preuss on 16 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 116.

The 1767 census records that Mattias Bender came from the German village of Weinheim in the Kurpfalz region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Bender family among the Volga German colonies.
