Discussion & Documentation

Michael Bergem, son of Johannes Bergem & Catharina Conpin of Nospelt, married on 13 June 1762 in Kayl [Luxembourg] to Elisabetha Laux, daughter of Andrea Laux & Catharina Wagener of Rümelingen.

The parish register of Kayl records the baptism of Margareta Berchem, daughter of Michael Bergem & Elisabetha Laux, on 16 March 1764.

Michael Bergheim [sic], a farmer, his wife Elisabeth, and daughter Margaretha (age 4) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 16 August 1766 aboard a galliot named Adler (Eagle) under the command of Skipper Paul Adolph Drath.

Michael Bergern [sic] and his wife Elisabeth are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Michael Bernhard [sic], his wife Elisabeth, and daughter Elisabeth (age ¼) are recorded on the 1767 census of Hölzel in Household No. 34. They had settled in Hölzel on 11 September 1767.

In 1797, Johannes Bergen moved from Hölzel to Preuss.

Michael Bergen and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Hölzel in Household No. Hz29.

The 1834, 1850, and 1857 censuses of Hölzel clearly record this surname as Berger.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Michael Bergheim came from Luxembourg. The 1767 census records that they came from the village of Remeling [Rumelange/Rümelingen] in Luxembourg.
