Joseph Berkl, a tailor (Schneider), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Shcherbakovka on 15 June 1765. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 21.

The 1767 census records that Joseph Berkl came from the German village of Dietzen.
