Stephan Bartheis [sic], his wife Judith, and children (Johannes, age 20; Christina, age 18; Peter, age 16) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 10 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Nikolaus Peter Pink.
Stephan Bartheis, his wife Judith, and children (Johannes, age 20; Christiana, age 18; Peter, age 16) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Ober-Monjou on 3 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 73.
In 1784, Peter Bertus and his family moved from Ober-Monjou to Mariental.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Stephan Bartheis [sic] was a farmer from the German region of Mainz. The 1767 census records that Stephan Bartis [sic] was a barber (Friseur) from the German village of Besers [?] [Besseringen?] in the Mainz region.
Subsequent generations spell this surname as Bertus.
