An article by Wilhelm Funk records the following going to Russia:
Joh. Christian Bräutigam, a hat maker (Hutmacher), son of the deceased Joh. Gottfried Bräutigam, a tanner (Lohgerber) in Schmella [Schmölln] near Altenburg in Saxony, & Susanna Cathar. Maurer, daughter of the deceased Joh. Gg. Maurer [sic], a coppersmith (Rothschmied) in Nürnberg, both Lutheran, were married 6 June 1766 in the Lutheran Church in Wöhrd.
Johann Martin [sic] Brautigam and his wife Susanna arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 16 August 1766 aboard a snow-brig named Prinz Carl (Prince Carl) under the command of Skipper Christopher Losser.
Johann Martin [sic] Bräutigam and his wife Susanna are recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
Johann Christian Brautigam, a milliner (Hutmacher), and his wife Susanna Maurer settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 3 August 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 137.
Christoph [sic] Brautigam (age 48), a hat maker (Hutmacher), his wife Susanna Katharina née Maurer (age 29) are recorded on the 1776 Katharinenstadt Grundbuch [Land Register] in Household No. 17 along with a note recording the births of two children (Christina Friederika, born 18 August 1776; Anna Maria, born 1778).
In 1778, Christian Brautigam and his family moved from Katharinenstadt to Moscow.
Both the 1767 census and the 1776 Katharinenstadt Land Register record that Johann Christian Brautigam came from the German village of Schmale in the region of Sachsen (Saxony). His wife Susanna Maurer is recorded as coming from the German town of Nürnberg.
There are no known surviving male descendants of this family among the Volga German colonies.
