An article by Wilhelm Funk records the following going to Russia:
Joh. Christian Bräutigam, a hat maker (Hutmacher), son of the deceased Joh. Gottfried Bräutigam, a tanner (Lohgerber) in Schmella [Schmölln] near Altenburg in Saxony, & Susanna Cathar. Maurer, daughter of the deceased Joh. Gg. Maurer [sic], a coppersmith (Rothschmied) in Nürnberg, both Lutheran, were married 6 June 1766 in the Lutheran Church in Wöhrd.
Johann Christian Brautigam, a milliner (Hutmacher), and his wife Susanna Maurer settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 3 August 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 137.
In 1778, Christian Brautigam and his family moved from Katharinenstadt to Moscow.
The 1767 census records that Johann Christian Brautigam came from the German village of Schmale in the region of Sachsen (Saxony). His wife Susanna Maurer is recorded as coming from the German town of Nürnberg.
There are no known surviving male descendants of this family among the Volga German colonies.
