Johannes Engelbert, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Johann [Dietrich], age 20; Anna, age 18; Gertrude, age 13; Franz, age 10¼) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 11 June 1766 aboard a snow-brig named Der Jäger (The Hunter) under the command of Skipper Gabriel Will.
Johann Engelberth [sic] is recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
They arrived in the Volga German colony of Preuss on 15 July 1767. Father Johannes Engelbert, his wife Anna Maria, and children (Gertrude, age 16; Franz Wilhelm, age 13) are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 60. Son Johann Dietrich Engelbert, his wife Christina [widow of Peter Krotter], and stepsons (Christian Krotter, age 11; Christoph Krotter, age 10) are recorded on the 1767 census of Preuss in Household No. 61.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Engelbert came from the German region of Köln. The 1767 census records that both Johannes and Johann Dietrich Engelbert came from the German region of Mehlem.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Engelbert family among the Volga German colonies.
