Friedrich Mattias Freis, a cobbler (Schuhmacher), his wife Eva, and children (Christina, age 10; Leonhard, age 8; Kunigunda, age 5) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 7 May 1766 aboard the galliot named Anna Katharina under the command of Skipper Daniel Heyer.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Kaneau on 10 May 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 55.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Friedrich Mattias Freis came from the German region of Sachsen (Saxony). The 1767 census records that he came from the German region of Göthen.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Freis family among the Volga German colonies.
