Johann Samuel Gönningen, a gardner (Gärtner), his wife Anna, and daughter Wilhelmina (age 14) are recorded on the 1767 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 164 along with a note that they relocated to the colony of Basel in 1768. They had settled in Katharinenstadt on 17 August 1767.

The 1767 census records that Johann Samuel Gönningen came from the German village of Nordhausen in the Thüringen region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
