There are two Gross families that settled in Schaffhausen. Their relationship to each other, if any, needs further research.
(1) Andreas Gross, a carpenter (Zimmermann), and his wife Sophia arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.
Andreas Grosse [sic] and his wife Soph. Maria are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Kaneau on 7 June 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 19.
In 1785, Andreas Gross and his family moved from Kaneau to Schaffhausen.
The 1798 census of Bettinger records the widow and daughters of Andreas Gross from Schaffhausen in Household No. Bt40.
The 1798 census of Paulskaya records the widow and children of Friedrich Gross from Schaffhausen in Household No. Pl05.
Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census records that Andreas Gross came from the German region of Zerbst.
(2) Heinrich Gross, a carpenter, his wife Eleonora, and son Georg [Christoph] (age 20) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.
Widow Eleonora Gross and her son Georg Christoph are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that she had become a widow in Novgorod.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Kaneau on 22 July 1767. Widow Eleanora and son Christoph are recorded on the 1767 census of Kaneau in Household No. 36.
In 1786, Christoph Gross and his family moved from Kaneau to Schaffhausen.
The 1798 census of Schaffhausen records in Household No. Sh24 that Kaspar and Andreas Gross are working in the colony of Boisroux.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Heinrich Gross came from the German region of Zerbst. The 1767 census records that widow Eleanora Gross came from the German village of Lüttich.
