Discussion & Documentation

Christian Grunenwald [sic] from Giederheim [sic] in the area of Maynz & Elisabetha Schuh from Oberwiessenbach were married on 12 May 1766 in the City Lutheran Church of Friedberg.

Christian Grünewald, a farmer, his wife Elisabeth, and children ([a] Kaspar, age 18; [b] Anna, age 15; Michael, age 12) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 July 1766 aboard a ship named Der Ringende Jacob (The Wrestling Jacob) under the command of Skipper Johann Heitmann.

[a] Kaspar Grünewald (age 20) settled in the Volga German colony of Kukkus on 26 June 1767. He is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 40 along with the family of Johannes Berger. No relationship between Kaspar Grünewald and Johannes Berger is recorded.

[b] Anna Margaretha Grünewald (age 18) is recorded on the 1767 census of Dehler in Household No. 55 along with a note that her father Christian Grünewald, a farmer, had died in route to Saratov. She had arrived in Dehler on 26 June 1767.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Christian Grünewald came from the German region of Mainz. The 1767 census records that Anna Margaretha Grünewald came from the German village of Dietersheim in the Kurmainz region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Grünewald family among the Volga German colonies.
