Thomas Haalen, a craftsman (Handwerker), his wife Kathairna, and children (Michael, age 10; Anna Maria, age 5) settled in the Volga German colony of Herzog on 14 July 1766 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 13.

The 1767 census records that Thomas Haalen came from the German village of Görnitz in Bayern (Bavaria) and his wife coming from the German village of Wörth near Barth.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
