Johann Hammel, a farmer, his wife Gertrude, children ([a] Katharina, age 19; Charlotta, age 17½; [b] Johann, age 8; [c] Lora [Eleonora], age 8; Anna, age 1¼), and his mother-in-law Anna [surname not recorded] arrived from Lübeck via Reval [Estonia] at the port of Oranienbaum on 27 May 1766 aboard a pinque named Слон (Slon - Elephant in Russian) under the command of Lieutenant Sergey Panov.
[a] Katharina Hammel and her new husband Johannes Stamm are recorded on the 1767 census of Göbel in Household No. 43. They had arrived in Göbel on 25 May 1767. [See Stamm Family.]
[b] Johann Hammel is believed to be recorded as Philipp [Hammel] with Jakob & Wilhelmina Wolf on the 1767 census of Preuss in Household No. 40. They had arrived in Preuss on 12 May 1767. [See Wolf Family.]
[c] Eleonora Hammel is recorded on the 1767 census of Leitsinger in Household No. 22 along with the Jakob Schapert family. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Hammel and Schapert families.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Hammel came from the German region of Mainz.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Hammel family among the Volga German colonies.
