Hartmann (Walter)

Johann Matern [sic] Hartmann, son of Johann Conrad Hartmann and Anna Catharina Sauerwein, was born 29 June 1708. He married in Kleestadt on 13 February 1742 to Anna Catharina Holtzapffel, daughter of Johann Adam and Anna Barbara Holtzapffel. She had been born 6 October 1713 in Klein Umstadt.

They had the following children, all born in Kleestadt: (1) Maria Elisabetha, born 25 April 1743; (2) Johann Adam, born 1 November 1744; (3) Heinrich Christoph, born 26 November 1745; (4) Maria Elisabetha, born 5 February 1747; (5) Johann Valentin, born 10 April 1748; (6) Anna Margaretha, born 22 December 1749; (7) Eva, born 24 August 1751; (8) Eva Maria, born 3 July 1753; (9) Anna Margaretha, born 1 February 1757; and (10) Ottilia, born 11 August 1759.

The Kleestadt parish records note that Johann Matern Hartman's widow and children went to "Astracan" in 1766. At that time, the region in which the Volga German colonies were founded was in the Russian Province of Astrakhan at that time.

The unnamed widow of Martin Hartmann and her children (Stephan [Christoph?], age 20; Anna Maria, age 12; Margaretha, age 9) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

(1) Katharina Hartmann, widow of an unnamed [Johann Matern] craftsmann (Handwerker), and daughters (Anna, age 15; Eva, age 12) are recorded on the 1767 census of Walter in Household No. 107. They had settled there on 10 September 1767.

(2) Maria Elisabeth Hartman & Johann Wendel Hill from Spitzaltern were married on 17 June 1766 in the Lutheran Church of Büdingen.

Johann Wendel Hill and his wife Maria Elisabeth are recorded on the 1767 census of Walter in Household No. 96.

(3) Johann Adam Hartmann from Klestadt near Bobenhausen & Appollonia Bleitz from Brenschbach near Umstadt were married on 17 June 1766 in the Lutheran Church of Büdingen.

Johann Adam Hartmann, a farmer, and his wife Appolonia are recorded on the 1767 census of Walter in Household No. 75 along with a note that Johann Adam is missing. They had settled there on 25 August 1767.

(4) Christoph Hartmann, a farmer, and his wife Katharina are recorded on the 1767 census of Walter in Household No. 105. They had settled there on 10 September 1767.

There is also an orphan Philipp Hartmann (age 15) recorded on the 1767 census of Walter in Household No. 87 along with the Johann Konrad Link family. A relationship between the Hartmann and Link families is not recorded. His relationship, if any, to the other Hartmann families needs further research.
