Discussion & Documentation

Valentin Hartmann, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 15 September 1766 aboard the snow-brig Die Frau Dietrika under the command of Skipper Joachim Friedrich Luhn.

The parents and several children died after arriving in Russia. The surviving children settled in the Volga German colony of Yagodnaya Polyana on 16 September 1767. Son Peter Hartmann is recorded on the 1767 census of Yagodnaya Polyana in Household No. 54 with the Johann Adam Feller family.  Daughter Anna Margaretha is recorded on the 1767 census of Yagodnaya Polyana in Household No. 61 with the Johann Konrad Mohr family. The 1767 census does not record a relationship among the Hartmann, Feller, and Mohr families.

Heinrich Konrad Hartmann and Georg Hartmann from Yagodnaya Polyana and their families are recorded on the 1857 census of Neu-Yagodnaya-Polyana.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that the Valentin Hartmann family came from the German region of Hanau.

Georg Kromm's research that was published in 1912 records that the Hartmann family came from the German village of Bobenhausen.
