Johann Philipp Hartung, son of Johann Christoff Hartung & Anna Eleonora Dönges, was baptized 23 April 1732 in Büdingen.
Philipp Hartung left for Russia in 1766 as a single man, and arrived from Reval [Estonia] at the port in Oranienbaum on 30 May 1766 aboard the pink Novaya Dvinka under the command of Lieutenant Ivan Perepechin.
Philipp settled in the Volga German colony of Frank and is recorded there on the 1767 Census in Household No. 13.
Johann Philipp married Anna Barbara Lapp, daughter of Christian Lapp & Anna Katharina Schlingeloff, who had been on board the same vessel between Rewal & Oranienbaum. She had been baptized on 15 June 1749 in the village of Pferdsbach, about 3 kilometers north of Büdingen.
Philipp & Barbara Hartung are recorded on the 1798 Census of Frank at Household No. Fk036. Descendants of this family later moved to the daughter colony of Brunnental.
Over the years, descendants of this family have used a variety of surname spellings including: Hardung, Hartung, and Harding.
