There are two Herbst families that migrated to Russia together. They arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766. They also travelled from St. Petersburg to Saratov together in 1767.
(1) Pankrazius Herbst, a farmer, his wife Elisabeth, and daughter Margaretha (age 15) arrived in Oranienbaum.
Pantracius [sic] Herbst, his wife Elisabeth, and daughter Margaretha (age 15) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that all three of them died en route.
(2) Hans Herbst, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and mother Margaretha arrived in Oranienbaum.
Hans Herbst, his wife Catharina, and son Phillipp (born en route) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that son Phillipp also died en route.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Leitsinger on 15 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 75.
The 1767 census records that Johannes Herbst came from the German village of Laibarös in the Bamberg district.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Herbst family among the Volga German colonies.
