Discussion & Documentation

Christian Hermann, a farmer, and his wife Maria arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 16 May 1766 aboard the Russian galliot named Katharina Eleonora under the command of Skipper Peter Rehder.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Dehler on 26 June 1767. Christian Hermann is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 34 along with his wife Elisabeth and her son Nikolaus Schäfer (age 7). Her husband had died in route to Saratov in the group led by Oberlieutenant Oldenburg. [See Schäfer Family.]

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Christian Hermann came from the German region of Baden. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Weitersburg in the Kurpfalz.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Hermann family among the Volga German colonies.
