Philipp Hertel, a farmer, and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Kukkus on 26 June 1767. Philipp's unnamed wife died on 24 September 1767. He and his family are recorded on the 1767 census of Kukkus in Household No. 42.
The 1767 census includes a note that the Hertel family moved to the colony of Bangert in 1768.
The 1767 census records that Philipp Hertel came from the German village of Sörth in the district of Baden-Durlach.
