David Herwig married on 2 August 1762 in Heusenstamm to Katharina Hüttel.
The births of two of their children are recorded in the parish register of Mühlheim [am Main]: (1) Magdalena, born 24 September 1763, died 12 October 1763; and Konrad, born 29 April 1765.
David Herwig, his wife, and one child are recorded on a petition dated 24 February 1766 to the residents of Mühlheim to declare that they are not dishonest citizens of the town and that because they can no longer support themselves or their children and because they can no longer pay their debts they are released to move to Hungary [sic].
David Herwig, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and son Konrad (age 1½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 31 May 1766 aboard a galliot named Die Vergoldete Weintraube (The Gilded Grape) under the command of Skipper Joachim Hermann Andersen.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Keller on 12 May 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 50.
Following the destruction of Keller in 1774, they resettled to Neu-Kolonie.
In 1789, Katharina Herwig, daughter of David Herwig of Neu-Kolonie, married Michael Breder in Seelmann. Katharina Breder née Herwig and her family are recorded on the 1798 census of Seelmann in Household No. Sm05.
Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that David Herwig came from the German region of Mainz.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Herwig family among the Volga German colonies.
