Mathias Herzog, a soldier (Soldat), and his wife Julianna settled in the Volga German colony of Herzog on 14 July 1766 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 34. It is after him that the colony of Herzog took its name.
The 1767 census records that Mathias Herzog came from the German region of Kronau.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Herzog family among the Volga German colonies.
