Discussion & Documentation:

Two Hess families arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the ship Der Jager under the command of Skipper Gabriel Wild. Both settled in the Volga German colony of Preuss on 15 July 1767. Their relationship to each other needs further research, but they are presumed to be brothers.

(1) Franz Hess, a farmer, and his wife Anna Maria [née Schröpfer (see Schröpfer families)] arrived in Oranienbaum.

Franz Hess, a farmer, and his wife Anna Maria are recorded in Preuss on the 1767 census in Household No. 55.

Franz Hess and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Preuss in Household No. Ps45 along with a note that his son Johannes is working in the colony of Dehler.

Franz Hess and his family are recorded on the 1811 census of Preuss in Household No. 45.

Johannes Hess, son of Franz Hess, is recorded on the 1811 census of Preuss in Household No. 45 along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Mariental in 1802.

Johannes Hess, son of Franz Hess, and his family are recorded there on the 1834 census of Mariental in Household No. 207.

(2) Johann[es] Hess, a single farmer, and his mother Margaretha arrived in Oranienbaum.

Johannes Hess, a farmer, and his [new] wife Anna Maria [Schmidt] are recorded in Preuss on the 1767 census in Household No. 58.

The widow and son of Johannes Hess are recorded on the 1798 census of Preuss in Household No. Ps48.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that both of these Hess families came from Luxembourg. The 1767 census records that both Franz and Johannes Hess came from the village of Dalheim in Luxembourg.
