Discussion & Documentation

Orphan Margaretha Hesslich (age 19) is recorded on the 1767 census of Ober-Monjou in Household No. 16 along with the Johann Ernst Gründler family. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Hesslich and Gründler families.

The 1767 census does not record from where Margaretha Hesslich came.

[There is a Margaretha Hettrich who arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 14 June 1766 aboard the ship named Die Neue Fortuna (The New Fortune) under the command of Skipper Ahrens Steingraber. Margaretha Hedtrich is recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767. Perhaps this woman is the same as the orphan who settled in Ober-Monjou.]

There are no known surviving male lines of this Hesslich family among the Volga German colonies.
