Discussion & Documentation

Ignatius Hohenfertzen [sic], a farmer, his wife Sophia, and daughter Johanna [sic] (age 6) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard a ship named Die Zwei Gebrüder (The Two Brothers) under the command of Skipper Nicolaus Peter Pinck.

Ignatius Hohfelder [sic], his wife Maria Sophia, and daughter Justina (age 7) are recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Ignatius Hohenfelser [sic], a glazier (Glaser), his wife Sophia, and daughters (Justina, age 7; Johanna, age 3-months) are recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Beauregard in Household No. 62.

Sophia née Brauer (widow Hohenfelder) (age 40), a farmer's widow, and her children (Julianna, age 16; Johann Christoph, age 5) are recorded on the 1776 Katharinenstadt Grundbuch [Land Register] in Household No. 119 along with a note that the widow Hohenfelder remarried to Christian Eckardt and that daughter Julianna married Gottfried Windschuh. [See Eckardt & Windschuh Families.]

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that Ignatius came from the German region of Dessau. The 1776 Katharinenstadt Land Register records that Sophia née Brauer (widow Hohenfelder) came from the German village of Oranienbaum in the region of Anhalt-Dessau.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Hohenfelder family among the Volga German colonies.
