Thomas Hunger, a craftsman (Handwerker), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Mariental on 14 June 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 51.

The widow and sons of Thomas Hunger (Nikolaus, age 24; Jakob, age 19; Joseph, age 9) are recorded on the 1798 census of Mariental in Household No. Mt44.

Jakob Hunger and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Mariental in Household No. 89 and Joseph in Household No. 191.

The 1767 census records that Thomas Hunger came from the German village of Steyr in Austria.
