Discussion & Documentation

Johann Melchior Jäger, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard a packet-boat under the command of Midshipman Mankensey.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Karaman on 15 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 8.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Melchior Jäger came from the German region of Hanau while the 1767 census records that he came from the area of Friedberg.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Jäger family among the Volga German colonies.
