Discussion & Documentation

Gerhardt Jansen, a cooper (Fassbinder), and his wife Maria settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 27 August 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 57.

Gerhardt Jansen (age 34), his wife Anna Sophia née Kuhn (age 19), and daughter [by an earlier wife] Anna Maria (age 7) are recorded on the 1776 Katharinenstadt Grundbuch [Land Register] in Household No. 72 along with a note that Anna Sophia died 7 July 1776. Also recorded on the Land Register is his second wife Elisabeth née Besser (who had been married to Kaspar Weilert).

The 1767 census records that Gerhardt Jansen came from the Dutch village of Holveland in Holland and that his wife Maria came from the German region of Frankfurt am Main. The 1776 Katharinenstadt Land Register records that Gerhardt Jansen came from the Dutch village of Holveland and that his wife came from the German village of Hegt [probably Höchst] bei Frankfurt am Main.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Jansen family among the Volga German colonies.
