Discussion & Documentation:

There are two Küdemann families that arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 15 September 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Hans Karholm, and settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 3 August 1767. They are presumed to be brothers:

(1) Friedrich Küdemann, his wife Sara, and children (Margaretha, age 3; Heinrich, age 1) arrived in Oranienbaum.

Friedrich Kidemann [sic], his wife Sara, and daughter Margaretha (age 3) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that both Saraand Margaretha died en route.

Widower Friedrich Küdemann, a cobbler (Schuhmacher), (age 28) is recorded on the 1767 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 189 along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Basel in 1768.

(2) Heinrich Küdemann and his wife Maria arrived in Oranienbaum.

Heinrich Kidemann and his wife Maria are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that both Saraand Margaretha died en route.

Widower Heinrich Küdemann, a cobbler (Schuhmacher), (age 22) is recorded on the 1767 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 190 along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Basel in 1768.

Heinrich Küdemann and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Basel in Household No. Bs23.

The 1767 census records that both Friedrich & Heinrich Küdemann came from the German village of Minden near Machzen [?].

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
